…Becomes 12th state to secure regulatory powers under Electricity Act 2023
…NERC orders AEDC to restructure, complete transfer by February 2026

Nasarawa State has officially joined the league of Nigerian states managing their electricity markets, following the transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Nasarawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NASERC).

The handover, which aligns with the Electricity Act 2023 and the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was confirmed by NERC in a statement released Saturday via its official X handle.

According to the directive, NERC has mandated the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to incorporate a new subsidiary to oversee the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Nasarawa State. The AEDC is expected to execute this restructuring within 60 days, beginning from August 4, 2025.

“All transfers envisaged by the order are to be completed by 3rd February 2026,” NERC stated.

With this development, Nasarawa becomes the 12th state to reclaim electricity regulatory authority, joining Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo.

NERC also announced that Plateau State will assume full regulatory control of its electricity market on September 12, 2025. Additionally, the commission disclosed it has received preparatory transfer readiness notices from Abia and Delta states.

The transition reflects the ongoing decentralization in Nigeria’s power sector, enabling subnational governments to better manage electricity distribution within their territories.
