Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a forensic investigation into the death of former Ondo State governorship candidate, Bamidele Akingboye, after a disturbing photograph of his remains sparked suspicion of foul play.
The late politician, who contested under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November 2024 Ondo governorship election, was earlier reported to have died peacefully at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos on Wednesday. But a viral image showing bruises on his head raised fresh questions about the circumstances of his demise.
Human rights groups have since mounted pressure on the police, demanding a transparent and credible inquiry. Responding on Sunday via its official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, the command confirmed that CP Jimoh had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to discreetly handle the probe.
Detectives, supported by the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) unit, have already visited the residence, sealed off the area, and deployed advanced forensic tools to gather and analyse evidence.
Akingboye, who lost the 2024 election to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is now at the centre of a case that has gripped public attention and stirred concerns over possible foul play.
