A Nigerian financial adviser, Kalu Aja, has called on Western powers to redirect oil purchases to Nigeria as a strategic move to cut Russia’s war financing capabilities.

In a post on X on Thursday, Aja argued that the European Union’s continued dependence on Russian gas is sustaining Moscow’s military operations in Ukraine. He advised the EU and the United States to instead buy Nigerian crude and supply it to India at the same subsidized rate Russia currently offers.

According to him, this model would weaken Russia’s oil revenue while positioning Nigeria as a viable alternative supplier in the ongoing global energy realignment.

Western nations have repeatedly attempted to curb Russia’s war funding through sanctions and price caps, but the measures have produced limited results as Moscow pivots to India and China for energy sales. Nigeria, despite struggling with production shortfalls, remains Africa’s largest oil producer and a potentially strategic partner in reshaping global energy flows.
