The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has dismissed more than 800 employees in what appears to be one of its largest workforce reductions in recent years.
The mass layoff, which began on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, follows months of internal restructuring across the company’s operational areas in the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger, and Nasarawa States.
Sources within the company confirmed that the disengagement affected both senior and junior staff. One affected employee, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said those laid off were promised compensation as part of the exit process.
A termination letter issued to some staff stated that the decision was made after “careful consideration and in accordance with company policy” as part of an ongoing rightsizing exercise. Affected employees were directed to complete clearance procedures and return company property before receiving their exit payments.
As of press time, the management of AEDC and representatives of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) as well as the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEC) had yet to issue an official statement regarding the development.
The latest retrenchment underscores the utility company’s continued efforts to restructure its operations amid ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector.
