Two separate road accidents that occurred in Ogun State between Saturday and Sunday claimed the lives of two drivers and left four other persons injured.
The accidents happened at the Trailer Park area in Ijebu-Ode and the Arigbabu area of Sagamu, respectively.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incidents in a statement made available on Sunday.
According to him, the first crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Trailer Park, Ijebu-Ode, along the Sagamu–Benin Expressway. It involved a white containerised truck with number plate KTU 357 XX and a white passenger bus with number plate DGB 650 XA.
Akinbiyi said preliminary investigations revealed that the bus driver was speeding and lost control before ramming into the moving truck from the rear.
“Five people were involved; two were injured, while one person, the bus driver, died in the crash,” he said.
He added that operatives of TRACE, in collaboration with officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), evacuated the deceased to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary.
In a separate incident, another fatal crash occurred on Sunday morning at the Arigbabu area of the Mosimi–Sagamu–Ikorodu Expressway, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to two others.
Akinbiyi explained that the lone crash involved an unregistered mini truck whose driver reportedly fell asleep while driving and rammed into a culvert along the road.
“According to one of the occupants, the driver of the accidented vehicle fell asleep while driving and rammed into a culvert, which eventually led to his death. Three people were involved; two were injured, while one person, the driver, died,” he said.
He added that the deceased driver’s family arrived at the scene before officials and took his remains away, while the injured passengers were rescued by their relatives.
TRACE and FRSC operatives were said to have managed the traffic situation caused by the incident.
Akinbiyi, on behalf of the Acting TRACE Corps Commander, Elias Omonayajo, condoled with the families of the deceased drivers and advised motorists to always drive cautiously, avoid overspeeding, and take adequate rest to prevent accidents caused by fatigue.
