Popular Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has disclosed that his father once opposed his dream of becoming a comedian, insisting he study law instead.
Speaking in a candid interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus said his father strongly pushed him toward a legal career. However, after several failed attempts to secure a law admission, he opted to study Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
He recounted that his passion for comedy emerged on campus, where he began creating skits despite earning little to nothing. According to him, he kept the venture hidden from his father throughout his studies.
The comedian revealed that his father discovered the truth a year after his graduation when he began appearing on comedy show posters. The revelation sparked anger at home, with his father lamenting that he had “wasted money” training him to become a lawyer only for him to choose what he called a “stupid business.”
Sabinus said his father’s disapproval gradually faded as he began to thrive in the entertainment industry. He noted that once he started supporting his father financially from his comedy earnings, the older Ejekwu gave his full blessing.
