The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the Borno State local government elections, winning all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the state’s 27 Local Government Areas.
Chairman of the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSEC), Dr. Tahir Shettima, announced the results on Monday at the commission’s headquarters in Maiduguri, declaring that the exercise recorded peaceful conduct statewide.
Dr. Shettima said the elections were conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. He commended political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, journalists, and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Borno State for their collaboration, which he described as critical to the success of the polls.
He also praised Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for demonstrating commitment to grassroots democracy by approving the resources required for the conduct of the elections.
The BOSEC chairman urged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to justify the confidence reposed in them by delivering effective governance and tangible dividends of democracy at the local level.
Meanwhile, Governor Zulum had earlier expressed confidence in the APC’s victory while casting his vote on Saturday in his hometown of Mafa. He reiterated that Borno remains a stronghold of the APC and maintained that the party would continue to dominate the state, including in the 2027 general elections.
The newly elected local government officials are expected to be sworn in on a date to be announced.
