Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi announced his defection in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, declaring that the move is driven by a resolve to transform and rescue Nigeria from its current challenges.
Addressing supporters, Obi said the decision signals the beginning of a renewed political journey focused on national recovery. He expressed optimism that the coming year would usher in decisive action, stating that the coalition intends to lay the groundwork for meaningful change.
The former governor also vowed that the coalition would firmly oppose electoral malpractice, stressing that it would resist any attempt to rig the 2027 election through all lawful means.
Obi’s defection is expected to reshape the political landscape as opposition parties consolidate efforts to challenge the ruling establishment in the next presidential contest.
