Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has played down talks of equaling or surpassing the late Rashidi Yekini’s goal record, insisting his focus remains firmly on team success.
Osimhen spoke after captaining Nigeria to a 3–1 victory over Uganda in Tuesday’s AFCON group stage encounter. The Galatasaray forward led by example as the Super Eagles secured a crucial win, further strengthening their campaign in the tournament.
Despite edging closer to a historic milestone, the 27-year-old made it clear that personal records are not driving his performances. Osimhen currently has 32 goals for Nigeria, just five shy of Yekini’s long-standing national record of 37 goals.
Reflecting on the match and his leadership role, Osimhen said the captain’s armband gave him a deeper sense of responsibility and belonging within the team. He stressed that his priority is contributing through goals, assists, and overall effort rather than chasing individual accolades.
“I’m not thinking about equaling or surpassing Rashidi Yekini’s record for now; it’s all about the team,” Osimhen said after the win. “I’m fighting for my team to get goals and assists. Hopefully, not this AFCON and maybe not the qualifiers, but one day I know I am going to get there.”
With Nigeria’s AFCON campaign gaining momentum, Osimhen’s measured stance underscores his commitment to collective success as the Super Eagles push for continental glory.
