The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over what it described as a controversial passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the National Assembly.
Reacting on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the All Progressives Congress of undermining Nigeria’s democratic foundations through what he termed a display of impunity.
In a post shared on his X handle, Abdullahi warned that the actions of the ruling party could erode public confidence in the electoral system and destabilise democratic governance. He argued that despite controlling almost all state governments, the APC appeared uneasy about subjecting itself to a genuinely free and fair electoral process.
“With this level of impunity, we pray that the APC does not become the death of our democracy,” Abdullahi wrote.
He further alleged that the ruling party’s dominance across states had not translated into confidence in the electoral process, insisting that Nigerians would resist any attempt to subvert democratic norms.
“Almost all the governors are in their party, yet they are afraid of a free and fair election. But Nigerians will never surrender to tyranny. We have seen this before,” he added.
The development has sparked renewed debate over the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral reforms and the broader implications of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill on future elections.
