Real Madrid squandered a golden opportunity to close the gap on Barcelona at the summit of LaLiga after slumping to a shock 1-0 defeat against Getafe on Monday night at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Barcelona had earlier tightened their grip on the title race with a convincing 3-1 victory over Villarreal on Saturday, stretching their advantage to four points. Madrid needed a response. Instead, they faltered.
Despite dominating possession and carving out clear scoring chances, Los Blancos lacked the clinical edge required to break down a disciplined Getafe side. The hosts pushed forward relentlessly, but frustration steadily replaced fluency as the game wore on.
The breakthrough came against the run of play when Martín Satriano unleashed a stunning volley that silenced the Bernabeu. The Uruguayan forward seized his moment with precision, firing past Madrid’s goalkeeper to hand Getafe a priceless lead.
Madrid pressed aggressively in the second half, throwing numbers forward in search of an equaliser. However, their attacking moves repeatedly collapsed in the final third, as Getafe’s compact defensive structure absorbed wave after wave of pressure.
Tempers flared late in the contest when Franco Mastantuono received a straight red card for dissent, compounding Madrid’s misery and effectively ending their comeback hopes. Although Getafe were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time after Adrian Liso picked up a second yellow card, the dismissal came too late to alter the outcome.
The defeat leaves Real Madrid trailing Barcelona by four points in the LaLiga title race, intensifying pressure ahead of their next fixture. With the season entering a decisive stretch, Carlo Ancelotti’s men can ill afford further slip-ups.
