The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has praised the professionalism of Nigerian journalists, stressing that media practitioners should be treated with respect and not regarded as beggars.
The police chief made the remarks while speaking as a special guest at the congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory Council in Abuja on Saturday.
According to the IGP, journalists play a critical role in society by informing the public and contributing to national development. He noted that his relationship with the media has always been built on mutual respect and professionalism.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” Disu said.
The IGP commended journalists in the Federal Capital Territory for their commitment to responsible reporting and called for stronger collaboration between the police and the media.
He emphasized that a stronger police–media partnership would help improve public trust, enhance communication on security matters, and strengthen the fight against crime across the country.
Disu also urged both police officers and journalists to conduct themselves responsibly at all times, noting that professional conduct leaves lasting impressions in society.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the IGP on his appointment and described him as a longstanding friend of the press.
She expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of the council’s willingness to work closely with the police in reporting security issues objectively and responsibly.
Ike also revealed that the IGP would be invited as a special guest at the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration, while reaffirming the NUJ FCT Council’s commitment to promoting responsible journalism and supporting initiatives that strengthen security and governance in the territory.
