Residents of Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau State were gripped by fear and uncertainty on Monday following a deadly Sunday night attack in Angwan Rukuba that claimed at least 12 lives and left several others injured.

The Plateau State Government swiftly imposed a 48-hour curfew across Jos North to contain the situation and forestall further violence. The restriction, which took effect from midnight on March 29, is expected to remain in force until April 1, 2026.

In an official statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government said the measure was necessary to restore calm and prevent possible reprisals in the aftermath of the attack.

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang strongly condemned the killings, describing them as “barbaric and unprovoked,” and assured residents that security agencies have been fully mobilised to restore order and apprehend those responsible.

“The government is taking all necessary steps to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice,” the governor stated.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers, suspected to be cultists, stormed the Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The assailants, who reportedly rode in on motorcycles, opened fire indiscriminately, causing chaos and panic among residents.

Many residents fled for safety as gunshots echoed through the area, while others were caught in the crossfire. Security sources confirmed that at least 12 people were killed in the ആക്രമ, with several others sustaining injuries. Victims are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, although authorities have yet to release their identities.

While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, preliminary findings suggest it may be linked to cult-related violence. Security agencies have since launched investigations to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The latest violence has once again drawn attention to the fragile security situation in Jos North, a locality that has experienced recurrent unrest over the years, often tied to communal tensions and criminal activities.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm, adhere strictly to the curfew, and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.

Security personnel have been deployed to strategic locations across the area, with patrols intensified to enforce the curfew and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.

As of Monday morning, no additional attacks had been reported, but a heavy security presence remained visible, with many residents choosing to stay indoors amid lingering tension.

The Plateau State Government reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity and restoring lasting peace across the state, even as families of the victims await official confirmation and further updates on the tragic incident.
