The tension at Stamford Bridge has reached a boiling point as Javier Pastore, the agent for Enzo Fernández, launched a stinging critique of Chelsea’s decision to suspend the Argentine midfielder. The club handed down a two-game ban following public remarks Fernández made regarding his future, a move Pastore describes as “completely unfair” and lacking “real justification.” The 25-year-old World Cup winner is now set to miss a critical FA Cup quarterfinal against Port Vale this Saturday, as well as next Sunday’s high-stakes Premier League clash at Manchester City.
The controversy ignited last week when Fernández admitted he would “look at his options after the World Cup” and expressed a desire to eventually live in Spain. Despite being under contract until 2032 and frequently captaining the side in the absence of Reece James, Fernández has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. While the player has denied any formal talks with the Spanish giants, his comments were interpreted by the Chelsea hierarchy as a breach of commitment, leading to the disciplinary action.
“Enzo didn’t understand the situation,” Pastore told The Athletic, emphasizing that the player never explicitly stated he wanted to leave the club. Pastore praised his client’s professionalism, noting that while Fernández accepted the manager’s decision out of respect, the camp remains baffled by the severity of the punishment. “He doesn’t mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it,” the agent argued, suggesting that the midfielder remains fully committed to the Blues’ project despite his long-term personal aspirations.
The timing of the suspension couldn’t be worse for Chelsea, who are navigating a dense fixture list while attempting to secure silverware and climb the league table. With their midfield general sidelined for two pivotal matches, the club’s leadership is sending a clear message about loyalty, even as speculation regarding a summer exit continues to swirl.
Do you think Chelsea’s decision to ban their captain for expressing personal career goals is a necessary show of authority or an overreaction that hurts the team?
