The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially named the vastly experienced Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars. The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician takes over the reins at a critical moment, with only 72 days remaining before the 2026 World Cup begins. The appointment follows the departure of Otto Addo in March, after disappointing friendly defeats against Austria and Germany.

Queiroz brings an unmatched level of tournament experience to the Ghanaian bench. Having previously led Portugal and Iran, this appointment sets the stage for him to make his fifth consecutive World Cup appearance. Though his recent tenure with Oman ended last month after they failed to secure a spot in the upcoming tournament, the GFA Executive Council expressed confidence that his global expertise is what the team needs to navigate a challenging draw.

Throughout his storied career, the Mozambique-born former goalkeeper has managed a diverse array of national teams, including Egypt, Colombia, South Africa, and Japan. His most notable World Cup run came in 2010 when he guided Portugal to the Round of 16, and he famously led Iran through three consecutive editions of the tournament between 2014 and 2022.

The task ahead for Queiroz is daunting but clear. Ghana has been placed in Group L, where they will face off against Croatia, England, and Panama. With the clock ticking, the “Black Stars” will be looking to the Portuguese veteran to quickly instill discipline and a winning strategy as they prepare to take on some of the world’s most formidable squads on the global stage.

Will Carlos Queiroz’s defensive discipline be enough to help the Black Stars advance from a tough Group L?
