The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have introduced a new Tax ID system designed to improve tax administration and strengthen transparency across the country. The announcement was made through a public notice released in Abuja on May 18, 2026.

According to the agencies, the initiative follows the provisions of Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025. The law requires every taxable individual and organisation in Nigeria to obtain a valid Tax ID system registration.

Officials explained that the new platform will provide a single identity for taxpayers across Nigeria, allowing easier interaction with tax authorities at both federal and state levels. The system will also help unify taxpayer records, remove duplicate entries, and improve the handling of tax-related information nationwide.

The Tax ID system is expected to simplify important tax processes, including registration, filing, and payment. Authorities believe the initiative will also improve accountability, reduce tax leakages, and support better coordination of taxpayer data across all levels of government.

As part of the transition process, all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, along with financial institutions and organisations currently using the TIN Validation API, have been informed that the existing platform will be replaced by the new Tax ID system.

The agencies also advised organisations needing integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB. Corporate organisations seeking integration support were directed to the Tax Automation Department of the NRS for access to the Tax ID API and operational guidelines.

Do you think Nigeria’s new digital tax reforms will improve trust and efficiency in the tax system?
