Fear spread through a busy Swiss train station on Thursday morning after a man reportedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” attacked three people in front of shocked commuters and schoolchildren near Zurich.
According to Zurich Cantonal Police, the incident happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. at the Winterthur train station. Authorities identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Turkish-Swiss citizen.
A witness who spoke to local media outlet Blick said the man repeatedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” in an emotional and distressed manner before attacking three men with a bladed weapon. The violent incident triggered panic at the station as passengers and nearby schoolchildren tried to escape the scene.
Police confirmed that the victims, aged 28, 43, and 52, suffered different levels of injuries during the train station attack. The oldest victim underwent emergency surgery after sustaining a serious thigh injury.
Officials also revealed that the 43-year-old victim received treatment for a neck injury and has already left hospital. The 28-year-old victim is also expected to recover.
Emergency teams and police officers responded quickly to the situation and arrested the suspect at the scene before the attack could escalate further. Authorities later described the incident as a “heinous act of t+rrorism” while investigations continue into the possible motive behind the assault.
