By Eppe Franklyne| Jose Mourinho could make a sensational return to Real Madrid if current club president Florentino Perez wins Sunday’s presidential election.
Perez, who is seeking another term in charge of the Spanish giants, confirmed the development on Wednesday through his social media platforms. The announcement came as part of his campaign ahead of the club’s first contested presidential election in two decades.
The veteran administrator, who is facing businessman Enrique Riquelme, released a short video featuring Jose Mourinho. In the clip, the Portuguese manager simply responded, “Yes!” The video was accompanied by the campaign slogan “So MOUch history to be made”, a clear reference to the former Real Madrid coach.
The proposed Jose Mourinho return follows a disappointing period for Real Madrid. The club failed to win major domestic honours, while rivals Barcelona secured consecutive La Liga titles. Real Madrid have also exited the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage in each of the last two seasons, increasing pressure for change at the club.
During his previous spell in Madrid, Mourinho guided the club to a record points tally in La Liga in 2012 and helped restore competitiveness against Barcelona. Since leaving Spain, he has won trophies with Manchester United and AS Roma, including the Europa League and the UEFA Conference League.
Meanwhile, Perez’s rival, Enrique Riquelme, outlined his own ambitious plans during a television appearance. He revealed that Rodri would be his first signing if elected and also expressed interest in bringing Erling Haaland to the Santiago Bernabéu. Riquelme added that club legend Raul would become sporting director under his administration.
Despite debate over Mourinho’s tactical approach in modern football, Perez appears convinced that the experienced coach can bring discipline, leadership and winning mentality back to a squad featuring stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.
