By Babatunji Wusu| The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the derailment of a passenger train operating on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor in Agbor, Delta State, resulting in the deaths of three people.

According to the corporation, four coaches of the train left the tracks during the incident, triggering an immediate emergency response and evacuation operation for passengers on board.

In a statement, the NRC said rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage the situation and ensure the safety of passengers.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed a serious train accident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor at Agbor, Delta State,” the corporation stated.

It added that emergency procedures were activated immediately after the derailment occurred.

“Rescue and emergency response operations were immediately activated. All passengers on board have now been accounted for,” the statement noted.

Managing Director of the NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, confirmed that authorities acted quickly to bring the situation under control while coordinating support for affected passengers.

The corporation also disclosed that casualties were recorded during the incident.

“Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time,” the NRC said.

According to Opeifa, investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the derailment. He added that relevant agencies are assessing the incident while providing necessary assistance to victims and their families.

The Warri–Itakpe Train Service remains one of Nigeria’s key rail routes, connecting communities across several states and serving thousands of passengers annually.

The train derailment has raised concerns among travellers and stakeholders, with many awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the cause of the accident.

The NRC assured the public that further updates would be provided as more details emerge from ongoing assessments and inquiries.
