By Eppe Franklyne| Real Madrid have seen a major move for Julian Alvarez fall through after Atletico Madrid rejected a bid worth €150 million (£173.25 million). The Spanish giants confirmed the development on Tuesday, revealing that their city rivals pointed to the Argentine striker’s €500 million release clause as the reason for turning down the offer.

In a statement published on the club’s official website, Real Madrid explained that its board had approved an offer of €150 million for the player’s federative rights. The club added that Atletico Madrid declined the proposal despite the strong relationship that exists between both sides.

According to the statement, Atletico chose not to negotiate and instead referred Real Madrid to the forward’s release clause. The failed approach has become one of the biggest talking points in the ongoing transfer market.

However, Atletico Madrid quickly challenged Real’s version of events with a strongly worded response on social media.

“You must have confused politeness with gratitude, but so there is no doubt: we do not thank you for anything,” ‌Atletico posted on X. “We neither studied nor evaluated any offer for Julian.”

The rejected bid arrived just one day after Florentino Perez secured another four-year term as Real Madrid president, winning the club’s first contested presidential election in 20 years. Ahead of the vote, Perez had promised to invest €150 million in a new signing, although he did not reveal the player’s identity at the time.

The spotlight has now fallen firmly on Julian Alvarez, who enjoyed an impressive campaign last season. The Argentine forward scored 20 goals in 49 appearances and played a key role as Atletico Madrid finished fourth in the league standings.

For now, the future of Julian Alvarez remains unchanged, with Atletico showing no sign of lowering their demands for the highly rated striker.
