By Babatunji Wusu| The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to mark Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance and national unity. The announcement highlights the importance of Democracy Day in Nigeria’s political history and its role in promoting democratic values across the country.
The declaration was conveyed by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani. According to the statement, Democracy Day remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, representing the courage, sacrifices and determination of citizens who fought for the nation’s freedom and democratic rights.
The government noted that the efforts of these individuals continue to shape Nigeria’s democratic institutions and strengthen the values that support good governance. It stated that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the nation’s progress and the collective responsibility to preserve democratic ideals.
Tunji-Ojo stressed that the current administration remains committed to promoting the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance. He explained that these principles are essential for sustainable development, social advancement and the continued growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
The minister also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with security agencies, would continue to enhance measures aimed at protecting lives and property nationwide. He emphasised that peace and security remain fundamental to the success of Democracy Day and the stability of democratic institutions.
He further encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to responsible citizenship, lawful conduct and national cohesion. The government also urged citizens to support democratic institutions, noting that the strength and future of Democracy Day celebrations depend on the actions and values of the people.
