By Babatunji Wusu| Two suspected high-ranking members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have reportedly surrendered to Nigerian troops in Yobe State, in what security sources describe as a significant development in ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East.

The suspects, identified as Abu Umar and Ismail Mohammed, reportedly surrendered to troops of the 159 Battalion on June 8 in Geidam, Yobe State. According to security reports, the pair were considered influential figures within the insurgent group, making the ISWAP surrender a potentially valuable breakthrough for military operations in the region.

Sources said Abu Umar was regarded as a key technical specialist within ISWAP, while Mohammed allegedly served as a field commander operating around Baa Shuwa in the Timbuktu Triangle, an area widely known as a stronghold for insurgent activities in the North-East.

Security officials reportedly identified Abu Umar as a specialist involved in the construction and deployment of improvised explosive devices. Individuals with such expertise are often viewed as critical assets within insurgent organisations because of their technical knowledge and operational value. As a result, the latest ISWAP surrender is expected to provide useful intelligence to security agencies.

Authorities believe information obtained from the suspects could help uncover insurgent facilities, training locations, storage sites and logistical networks operating across the Lake Chad region. The development may also assist ongoing military efforts aimed at weakening extremist activities in the area.

Security analysts noted that Abu Umar’s reported role within the group makes the ISWAP surrender particularly important. Improvised explosive devices have been among the most destructive tools used by insurgents during attacks on military formations and civilian targets over the years.

The suspects are expected to undergo further debriefing as security agencies seek actionable intelligence that could strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism operations and support efforts to improve security across the North-East.
