Fire Destroys Shops, Offices in Kano

By Babatunji Wusu| A major Kano fire outbreak on Thursday night destroyed several properties, including offices and shops, along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State. The incident, which occurred near First City Monument Bank (FCMB), caused extensive damage but did not result in any loss of life.

According to the Kano State Fire Service, the blaze started at a salvage yard popularly known as Takumbo Market before spreading rapidly to nearby buildings. The agency said it received a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. from one of its personnel, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Firefighters from the Service Headquarters and other metropolitan fire stations were quickly deployed to the scene to contain the Kano fire outbreak. Upon arrival, they found a one-storey building and an adjoining commercial complex measuring about 300 by 200 feet engulfed in flames.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a large quantity of goods and property was destroyed at the salvage yard before the fire spread to surrounding structures. The Kano fire outbreak affected the upper floor of the Kanawa Building, where two offices, two parlours, two toilets and a kitchen were destroyed.

The blaze also damaged two stores located on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited, adding to the scale of losses recorded during the incident.

Officials attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical spark. The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and business owners to take preventive measures by ensuring that electrical installations are properly maintained and safety standards are observed.

He also encouraged members of the public to promptly report emergencies to the nearest fire station, noting that early intervention can significantly reduce damage during a Kano fire outbreak.

No casualties were recorded as firefighters successfully brought the situation under control.
