Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed as the new manager of Lazio, with the Serie A club confirming the appointment on Tuesday. The move comes after the former Italy coach left the national team following its failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Lazio turned to the 48-year-old tactician after parting ways with Maurizio Sarri in May. The club ended the season in ninth place in the Italian Serie A and also suffered defeat to Inter Milan in the final of the Italian Cup.
Announcing the appointment, Lazio expressed confidence in the experience and leadership qualities that Gattuso brings to the role.
“The club warmly welcomes its new manager and is confident that his experience, professionalism and determination will help the club achieve its sporting objectives,” Lazio said in a statement.
The Lazio manager arrives with a solid coaching résumé, having guided Napoli to Italian Cup success in 2020. Club officials will hope his winning mentality and experience in top-level football can help improve the team’s fortunes and return Lazio to a stronger position in domestic competitions.
Gattuso’s appointment also comes at a time of uncertainty for the Italy national team, which has yet to name a permanent replacement following his departure. Former coach Silvio Baldini has been serving as caretaker manager since April while the search for a long-term solution continues.
Reports in the Italian media have linked Roberto Mancini, who guided Italy to victory at the European Championship in 2020, with a possible return to the national team setup.
With Gennaro Gattuso now beginning a new chapter at Lazio, attention will turn to how quickly he can reshape the squad and deliver results ahead of the upcoming season. Expectations will be high as the Lazio manager looks to restore the club’s competitiveness in Italian football.
