Seun Kuti says Fela’s privileged background played a major role in the Afrobeat legend’s rise to fame.
Speaking during an interview on Ada’s Room, the Grammy-nominated musician argued that his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, benefited from being the son of renowned nationalist and activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
According to Seun Kuti, Fela’s privileged background gave him opportunities and visibility that many talented people never had. However, he stressed that privilege alone could not guarantee success.
He said Fela combined those advantages with determination, resilience and hard work. Seun added that members of the Kuti family are taught to work for their achievements rather than depend on their family name.
“Nothing comes from nothing,” he said, explaining that Fela’s connection to Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti helped shape the path that made him famous.
Seun Kuti also reflected on his own experience as the son of a celebrated musician. He acknowledged that his family name can open doors but said it also creates intense expectations.
He noted that people often assume greatness comes automatically from a famous background. As a result, young artistes from well-known families face pressure to match the achievements of their predecessors.
While discussing Fela’s legacy, Seun Kuti maintained that talent and effort remain essential. He argued that although Fela’s privileged background offered opportunities, it was his dedication and creativity that cemented his place in music history.
