PDP 2027 Election Candidates Warned Against Defection as Party Tightens Rules

The PDP 2027 election candidates warned against defection message took centre stage on Wednesday as a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) moved to prevent elected candidates from leaving the party after securing its tickets.

Speaking during the presentation of Certificates of Return to 21 governorship candidates, Chairman of the PDP Interim National Working Committee, Tanimu Turaki, said the party would require all candidates to sign binding undertakings before their names are submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Turaki said the measure was designed to stop a repeat of past incidents where candidates allegedly defected after benefiting from the party’s platform.

“Nobody, moving forward, will take our mandate to another political party and get away with it,” he said. “Before we take your names to INEC, you will sign an undertaking.”

The PDP 2027 election candidates warned against defection announcement came as the faction declared that it had completed its nomination process nationwide, signalling readiness for the 2027 general election.

Furthermore, Turaki revealed that the party conducted background checks and security screening on aspirants before approving their nominations. According to him, the process aimed to reduce legal challenges and integrity concerns that could affect the party ahead of the polls.

The PDP leadership believes the new requirement will strengthen party loyalty and protect mandates secured under its platform.
