Lenny Joseph etched his name into football history after scoring Haiti’s first FIFA World Cup goal in 52 years during the Group C clash against Morocco at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday.

The landmark strike marked a memorable moment for the Caribbean nation, which returned to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1974. Although Haiti has already been eliminated from the race for the knockout stages, Joseph’s goal provided a significant highlight in the country’s campaign.

The 25-year-old forward, who was born in France to a Haitian father and a Congolese mother, only received his first call-up to the Haiti national team in 2026. Since joining the squad, he has quickly become a notable figure, and his latest achievement has secured his place in Haitian football history.

Joseph currently plays for Ferencváros, one of the leading clubs in Hungary’s top-flight league. His goal ended a remarkable drought that had lasted more than five decades for Haiti on football’s biggest stage.

Before Joseph’s strike, the last Haitian player to score at a World Cup was Emmanuel Sanon in 1974. Sanon found the net twice during that tournament and remains one of Haiti’s most celebrated footballers.

One of his goals came in a famous match against Italy, where he scored past legendary goalkeeper Dino Zoff. That goal carried added significance because Italy had not conceded in 19 consecutive matches before Sanon broke through their defence.

Now, with his historic effort, Lenny Joseph has joined Sanon in the record books and given Haitian supporters a moment to celebrate despite the team’s early exit from the tournament.
