ISWAP commanders surrender to Nigerian troops after military offensive

ISWAP commanders surrender after 76 senior and mid-level fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province laid down their arms to Nigerian troops, the military said on Monday. The ISWAP commanders surrender followed sustained air and ground offensives that targeted terrorist strongholds across the North-East.

Operation Hadin Kai spokesman, Captain Mohammed Goni, said intelligence-led operations forced the militants to abandon their camps and surrender. Several senior commanders are now in a secure facility where security officials are profiling and debriefing them.

Furthermore, the military said some fighters surrendered alongside their families. It added that the development highlights the success of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks, weaken their command structure and limit their movement across the region.

According to the military, the ISWAP commanders surrender reflects the group’s declining operational strength and falling morale as pressure on insurgents continues.
