Peter Obi says Nigeria’s World Cup absence reflects leadership failure

A fresh petition has raised allegations against Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, over claims that he travelled with a passenger who allegedly used different identities on flights. The petition, dated 12 July 2026, was addressed to Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo and copied to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The travel identity claims have sparked renewed attention and calls for an official review.

The petitioner, who described himself as a concerned employee within Nigeria’s aviation industry, urged the authorities to investigate what he called repeated violations of aviation security, regulatory standards and passenger safety. He alleged that the passenger, identified as one of Obi’s media aides, had earlier received a ban from Air Peace following repeated misconduct and confrontations at airports.

According to the petition, the woman continued to travel with the airline by using different names after the ban took effect. It further alleged that Peter Obi repeatedly helped to make those journeys possible despite the airline’s restrictions. The petition stated, “Despite this restriction, Peter Obi made arrangements repeatedly for this media thug to continue travelling under a different name in order to circumvent the airline’s decision.

“Such conduct by him undermines aviation security, compromises passenger identification procedures, and interferes with our airline’s ability to enforce lawful safety measures.”

The petitioner also claimed that airport staff could not complete proper identity checks whenever Peter Obi travelled with the passenger. The petition added, “Every time we stop her, he prevents us from checking her identity, even after she is reported by our staff on ground. Evidence of these flight tickets have also been attached as he is even on some of the Passenger Name Record, PNR,” while urging the relevant authorities to investigate the travel identity claims.

How should the authorities respond to these travel identity claims to strengthen confidence in aviation security?
