Peter Obi threat claims have triggered a fresh political row after the Presidency accused the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate of using repeated allegations about his safety to rally supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, made the accusation in a post on his verified X account on Saturday. He argued that Obi’s recent comments followed what he described as a pattern of similar claims.
The reaction followed Obi’s remarks in Berlin, Germany, where he alleged that there was an attempt on his life during a planned visit to Benue State in April 2025.
Bwala rejected the allegation and accused Obi of exploiting the issue for political gain. He claimed the former Anambra State governor was trying to energise members of the Obidient Movement ahead of future elections.
“The desperation of Peter Obi is palpable,” Bwala wrote. He also dismissed Obi’s allegation that the Benue State governor wanted to kill him, describing the claim as false.
Furthermore, Bwala referred to the recent controversy involving Obi’s complaints about alleged intimidation at Nigerian airports. He argued that the former governor had unfairly blamed airport authorities after allegedly breaching airport traffic rules.
However, Obi has consistently maintained that he faces intimidation because of his political activities. His supporters have also defended his claims, insisting that public officials should investigate any security concerns raised by political leaders.
The latest exchange highlights growing political tension as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
