New Zealand Withdraws Support for Infantino, Seeks FIFA Review

New Zealand Football (NZF) has withdrawn its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino and called for an independent review of his abandoned plan to sell part of the World Cup.

The decision adds to growing pressure on Infantino, following an open letter from UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC that accused the FIFA president of damaging trust through “deception”. The three confederations reportedly want the Swiss official to step down before he can seek re-election next March.

NZF said its decision followed careful consideration of recent developments within FIFA.

“After careful consideration NZF has formed the view that decisions and actions within FIFA have contributed to a breakdown in trust and increased division within international football,” the association said.

It added that FIFA governance needed an independent review to rebuild confidence in the organisation.

“An independent review is required to restore confidence and trust.”

NZF also urged FIFA member associations to push for stronger governance, accountability and transparency, describing those principles as essential to maintaining confidence in the administration of world football.

The statement followed a meeting of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) on Wednesday. The regional body welcomed FIFA’s decision to shelve the investment proposal but stopped short of calling for Infantino’s resignation.

“Good governance, transparency and respect for established institutional processes are fundamental to the effective administration and sustainable development of football,” the OFC said.

The growing dispute has placed FIFA leadership under increased scrutiny, while FIFA itself has responded by criticising attempts to “undermine” football’s governing body and Infantino.
