The 2027 general election will be a struggle between Nigerians and what he described as “the oppressors”, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said.

Kwankwaso made the comment when South-East leaders and members of the Kwankwaso National Network (KNN) visited him at his residence in Abuja.

The delegation was led by KNN South-East Coordinator, Dr Ukpai Iro Ukpai. It briefed the former Kano State governor on the group’s activities and its plans to mobilise support for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket across the region.

According to Ukpai, Kwankwaso said growing dissatisfaction with conditions in Nigeria had increased the demand for political change.

He urged Nigerians to look beyond political differences and treat the 2027 general election as a decision about the country’s future.

“It is not about me, it is about us,” Kwankwaso was quoted as saying.

He also urged supporters of the alliance to remain committed beyond the election. According to him, the struggle should continue after votes are counted.

Kwankwaso referred to the recent Osun governorship election as an example of what determined voters could achieve. He said Nigerians could protect their mandates when they remained committed to the electoral process.

The former governor also urged citizens to reject electoral fraud and vote selling.

He warned that short-term personal gains should not take priority over the country’s long-term future.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso asked KNN leaders to strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission lists the presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027.
