The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the Edo State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The union announced the decision in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele, and Secretary, Dr William Odion, and made available to journalists in Benin City.
According to the statement, dated Monday, August 24, 2026, the industrial action will begin today, Tuesday, August 25.
The AAU ASUU strike followed a congress meeting held by the union on Monday. Members reached the decision after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum previously issued to the Edo State Government and the university’s management.
The union said the action centres on the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement by the state government. The development could disrupt academic activities at Ambrose Alli University as lecturers withdraw their services indefinitely.
The AAU ASUU strike comes amid continued concerns over the implementation of agreements affecting university workers and the conditions required to maintain stable academic activities.
The union’s decision means students, lecturers and other members of the university community may face uncertainty over the continuation of academic programmes until the dispute between the union, the university management and the state government is addressed.
The ASUU strike at AAU also places renewed pressure on the Edo State Government to respond to the union’s demands and seek a resolution that could restore normal activities at the institution.
