The SDP Nasarawa governorship candidate for the 2027 election will be former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, after the Social Democratic Party selected him during a direct primary on Saturday.
Party members affirmed Adamu through a voice vote at the primary. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitored the exercise.
His emergence followed the withdrawal of the party’s former candidate, Musa Adamu Angba. With Angba out of the race, party members backed the retired police chief to fly the SDP flag in the 2027 governorship election.
Adamu served as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police before retiring from the police force. His entry into the Nasarawa race now places him at the centre of the SDP’s campaign ahead of the election.
Speaking after his emergence, Adamu promised to focus on basic services if voters elect him governor.
He highlighted roads and healthcare as key areas of concern. He also stressed the need to improve services in rural communities across the state.
According to the SDP Nasarawa governorship candidate, his campaign will not focus only on broad promises. Instead, he said the party would identify practical problems affecting individual wards and local government areas.
This approach could give the campaign a strong grassroots focus. It would also allow the SDP to address issues that voters face in their communities.
However, Adamu will face the challenge of convincing voters in a competitive political environment. The 2027 election is expected to attract several political parties and candidates seeking to control Nasarawa State.
For the SDP, Adamu’s experience in public service could become a major part of its campaign message. At the same time, voters will likely judge the party by how clearly it presents solutions to local problems.
The former police chief has now formally entered the race. His next task will be to build support across Nasarawa’s wards and local government areas.
The SDP Nasarawa governorship candidate will therefore need to turn his promises on roads, healthcare and rural development into a campaign that connects with voters.
