NDC Peter Obi has arrived in Jos, the Plateau State capital, after leaving Benue State, where suspected political thugs reportedly blocked a major road and prevented his convoy from entering Makurdi.
Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), travelled to Jos after the incident in Benue.
The former Anambra State governor said he had planned to visit Yelewata to meet families affected by the June 2025 massacre.
However, youths allegedly blocked his convoy at Gyado Villa along Gboko Road.
The incident disrupted Obi’s movement and raised fresh concerns about political security ahead of future elections.
Obi later called on security agencies to intervene. He specifically appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services and other relevant authorities.
He urged them to call state governors to order and prevent political violence from escalating.
“I’m using this occasion to appeal to the IG of police, the Director of DSS, and other agencies to please intervene,” Obi said.
The presidential candidate also warned that political supporters could respond if the government failed to protect them.
“I was a governor myself. This rascality cannot be allowed,” he said.
Obi added that his supporters had the capacity to confront those responsible, but stressed that security remained the responsibility of the state.
The confrontation comes amid growing political activity across Nigeria as politicians intensify their campaigns and public engagements.
Meanwhile, Obi’s movement from Benue to Plateau highlights the security challenges political candidates can face while travelling across states.
The authorities have not publicly identified those responsible for the alleged road blockade.
The incident is likely to renew debate about political intolerance, freedom of movement and the duty of security agencies to protect political actors.
