Kano State military bases planned to tackle rising banditry

Kano State military bases will be expanded after the Federal Government agreed to establish additional bases in areas facing growing security threats, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has said.

The decision follows the reported infiltration of armed bandits into some parts of Kano State. The governor said the new bases would help security agencies protect lives and property.

Kano State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muhammad Taju Usman, disclosed the development after a security meeting held on 5 September 2026.

The meeting brought together Governor Yusuf, the 44 local government council chairmen, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, the commissioner and the state Accountant-General.

According to Mr Usman, the meeting examined security, infrastructure and human capital development across the state.

He said the participants agreed to strengthen Kano’s security system in response to emerging threats.

The commissioner said Governor Yusuf had also met the Minister of Defence to discuss additional security measures.

As a result, authorities plan to establish more Kano State military bases in local government areas considered vulnerable to attacks.

The proposed security arrangement will also include the Nigeria Police Force, Neighbourhood Watch and forest guards.

However, the authorities have not publicly listed all the locations where the new military bases will be built.

The move comes as concerns over armed banditry continue to grow in parts of northern Nigeria. For Kano residents, the planned deployment is expected to improve the security presence in vulnerable communities.

Meanwhile, the state government says stronger security must go alongside investment in infrastructure and human development.

The latest plan therefore signals a broader attempt to reinforce security at the local level while responding to threats before they spread further.
