Suspected impostor posing as a soldier arrested at Adamawa checkpoint

A suspected impostor posing as a soldier has been arrested by troops of Sector 4 of the Nigerian military at Tsamiya Checkpoint in Barama, Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The arrest took place at about 18:40 local time on 27 September 2026, according to counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama.

Makama disclosed the arrest in a statement posted on X on Tuesday.

He said troops apprehended the man while he was allegedly presenting himself as a member of the Nigerian military.

The suspected impostor posing as a soldier was reportedly wearing military uniform when troops stopped and arrested him at the checkpoint.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may have used the uniform to gain the trust of members of the public.

Makama said the suspect allegedly intended to defraud unsuspecting civilians while presenting himself as military personnel.

However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged fraud remain subject to further investigation.

The arrest comes as security agencies continue to monitor checkpoints and other strategic locations across the country.

Military personnel routinely operate checkpoints to monitor movement, identify security threats and prevent criminal activities.

Meanwhile, impersonating security personnel can create risks for both members of the public and genuine officers. It can also make it harder for security agencies to identify people who falsely claim to have official authority.

The suspected impostor posing as a soldier remains in custody as authorities continue their preliminary investigation.
