ADC $1 billion social protection programme and Nigeria’s economic hardship

Sokonte Davies has joined the Rainbow Coalition after failing to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship ticket in Rivers State.

The ADC said its governorship aspirant was disappointed by the outcome of the party’s May 2026 primary election.

Davies later shifted his political alliance to the Rainbow Coalition, a group formed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

Reports said Davies met Mr Wike in Port Harcourt on Wednesday morning. During the meeting, he expressed his decision to join the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC responded to the move in a statement. The party said Sokonte Davies had embarked on what it described as an “interesting political journey”.

According to the party, Davies moved from seeking the ADC governorship ticket to joining a coalition that does not have a governorship ticket.

The ADC questioned the decision.

“If the grievance was about not getting a governorship ticket in the ADC, one would have expected the next destination to be somewhere a governorship ticket was actually available,” the party said.

However, the ADC said politics remained a matter of personal choice.

The party added that Davies was entitled to choose his political path.

The development comes as political activity increases in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Rainbow Coalition has attracted political figures and groups seeking to shape alliances ahead of the election.

Meanwhile, the ADC is also preparing to strengthen its political structure in the state.

Davies’ decision could therefore add another layer to the growing realignment among political actors in Rivers State.

For now, the ADC has acknowledged his decision while maintaining that political choices remain the right of individual politicians.
