On Thursday, the police in Osun arrested a 45-year-old man, Michael Obeyagbor, before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 12 pigs valued N1.2 million.
ASP Emmanuel Abdullahi, the prosecutor, told the court that the defendant committed the crimes on December 25, about 4:30 a.m., in the Oniyanrin Mosan area of Ile-Ife.
According to Abdullahi, the defendant took 12 pigs worth N1.2 million from one Olusola Ojo.
He went on to say that the defendant illegally encroached on a plot of land used for piggery pens, equipped with deadly weapons and threatening the owner of the pens.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant denied the owner of the pens access to the livestock, which was his source of income.
He went on to say that the defendant had illegally and cruelly shot and killed some piglets on multiple times without justification.
The prosecutor indicated that the defendant acted in a way that was likely to produce mayhem in the Oniyanrin district of Ile-Ife.
Sections 81, 249(d), 390(3)(9), and 450 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2022, he claims, are violated.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the four-count accusation of stealing, invasion, murder, and breach of peace.
Mr Gbenga Omiwole, the defendant’s defense counsel, applied for bail in the most liberal terms possible, stating that his client would not jump bail but would furnish solid sureties.
Magistrate A.O. Famuyide granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in the same amount.
According to Famuyide, the sureties must swear to affidavits of means and reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
The matter was then delayed until January 16, 2023 for further consideration. (NAN)
