- NERC Approval Fuels Tariff Adjustment
- Band A Customers to Pay Up to N241.45/kWh
- Macroeconomic Pressures Cited as Key Reason
Aba Power, an electricity distribution company serving Abia State, has introduced a significant electricity tariff increase exceeding 50%. The new rates, which took effect on January 1, 2025, were announced through the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The hike follows approval by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Under the revised tariff structure, customers on Band A feeders will now pay between N219.70 and N241.45 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), a sharp rise from the previous rate of N99/kWh.
For Band B customers, the new rates range from N180.77 to N203/kWh, while Band C feeders will see charges between N145 and N205/kWh.
Explaining the adjustment, Aba Power attributed the increase to prevailing economic challenges impacting its operations.
“We have recently received approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for an adjustment of electricity tariffs, effective January 1, 2025. This move is essential to address macroeconomic realities and ensure the continued delivery of high-quality services in compliance with regulatory standards,” the company stated.
It’s worth noting that in April 2024, NERC had similarly approved tariff increases for electricity distribution companies across Nigeria.
