The Abia State Government has fulfilled its promise to reward athletes who brought glory to the state in national and international sports competitions.

On Thursday at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the state disbursed cash prizes worth N33 million to athletes, N22 million to coaches, and N20 million to two medalists who secured gold and silver at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Governor Alex Otti, who first announced the rewards in October, also committed to overhauling the Umuahia Township Stadium, acquiring a Coaster bus for the state’s sports council, and providing an official car for the director of sports.

Abia’s Director of Sports, Obioma George, announced that payments were made directly to the athletes’ bank accounts, with provisions for parents to assist those without accounts. He also confirmed that 15 athletes granted automatic employment in the state’s sports council are being processed for their new roles.

“These rewards and jobs are meant to retain our talents in Abia and prevent them from leaving for other states or countries,” George stated, urging parents to use the funds responsibly for their children’s education and career growth.

Governor Otti’s efforts are poised to inspire a new wave of dedication among Abia’s athletes, setting the stage for sustained excellence in sports.
