AC Milan has officially welcomed Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach, signing him to a three-year contract. Fonseca steps in to replace Stefano Pioli, as announced by the Serie A club on Thursday.

Pioli’s departure follows Milan’s second-place finish in the previous season, where they trailed 19-time Italian champions Inter Milan by 19 points. Disappointing performances in both the Champions League and domestic cups contributed to Pioli’s exit.

At 51 years old, Fonseca brings a wealth of experience to the role. He most recently managed French club Lille and previously held the helm at AS Roma from 2019 to 2021.

In a statement, AC Milan confirmed Fonseca’s appointment as the head coach of the men’s first team, signaling a new chapter for the club under his leadership.
