The west western nations have been encouraged by President Muhammadu Buhari to return money stolen by former colonial rulers as well as artifacts plundered by British colonialists.
In an opinion piece headlined “The West must return Africa’s stolen cash, as well as its artefacts,” which appeared in the Financial Times of London on Thursday, October 6, the president stated that just a small portion of Nigeria’s looted money had been retrieved.
He states that “Nigerians were overjoyed this summer by the news that 72 artifacts, known as the Benin Bronzes, held by the Horniman Museum in London were returning home, 125 years after being pillaged by British troops. The demand for returning looted treasures is growing louder and louder.
I regard them as a part of the same fight to return to Nigeria what is rightfully ours. There was once a comparable clamor for the return of Africa’s stolen assets.
