Actress Basira Beere Alleges Domestic Abuse, Says She Lost Four Pregnancies

Popular Yoruba actress Omoshalewa Yusuf, widely known as Basira Beere, has spoken publicly about her failed marriage, alleging years of domestic abuse by her former husband.

Speaking during an appearance on the Talk to B podcast, the actress said she endured repeated physical assaults during the marriage and claimed the violence led to the loss of four pregnancies.

Basira Beere said some of her friends had expressed concerns before the marriage, warning that her then-husband was “of a lower calibre” than she was. However, she said she ignored the concerns and supported him financially, including sponsoring a significant part of their wedding.

According to her, problems in the marriage began shortly after the wedding ceremony following a disagreement over a text message sent by a male acquaintance.

“It was so tough; he beat me so much that even our landlord tried to intervene,” she said.

The actress further alleged that despite reporting the abuse to her parents, she was repeatedly advised to remain patient and endure the marriage.

She said the violence escalated over time, adding that her siblings witnessed some of the incidents.

Basira Beere claimed that during one of the alleged assaults, she was left covered in blood. She also referenced an earlier social media report about the incident, saying she did not know who leaked the information online.

Domestic violence advocates in Nigeria have repeatedly called for stronger support systems for victims, warning against cultural pressures that encourage individuals to remain in abusive relationships.

Her former husband has not publicly responded to the allegations.
