…Party says 90 million Nigerians still live in darkness
…Questions lack of reform, roadmap halfway into tenure
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of betraying his campaign promise to deliver 24-hour electricity to Nigerians, insisting that more than 90 million citizens still have no access to power two years into his administration.
In a strongly worded statement posted on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the Tinubu-led government has shown no urgency or direction in addressing Nigeria’s worsening power crisis.
“Today, we just want to take some time to remind President Tinubu that he promised Nigerians uninterrupted electricity within four years. Yes, that’s right—Mr. President promised us 24/7 power. All by himself,” the statement read.
Abdullahi lambasted the President for what he described as a litany of broken promises, noting that while electricity tariffs have soared by over 240% since Tinubu assumed office, the national grid has collapsed 12 times, leaving millions of households and businesses stranded in darkness.
“Over 90 million Nigerians still lack electricity, and those who have access barely get four to six hours a day,” he stated. “In many rural communities, most of Nigeria’s 50 million families remain completely off-grid.”
The ADC said despite the mounting crisis, there has been no major reform or clear roadmap from the Tinubu administration.
“We are past the halfway mark of this administration, and millions of Nigerians are still charging their phones at mobile charging kiosks and spending hundreds of thousands of naira annually to fuel generators,” Abdullahi said.
He also reminded the President of his campaign remarks that if he failed to fix electricity, he shouldn’t be voted for. “Nigerians have not forgotten that promise,” he said.
The ADC called on President Tinubu to explain why the power situation continues to deteriorate and demanded a clear plan forward. “How much longer must Nigerians wait?” the party asked.
