A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Adebayo Adelabu, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved his decision to resign from his ministerial position in order to contest the state’s governorship election.

Speaking to supporters, Adelabu said he delayed his resignation to meet with the president, who appointed him, before taking the decision.

“I travelled and ensured I saw the person who appointed me before resigning. That was why I delayed it,” he said.

According to Adelabu, the meeting took place last week, during which he said the president encouraged him to pursue his political ambition.

“Tinubu said the time has come. He told me to resign as Minister and go and start work immediately,” Adelabu stated.

He added that the president indicated a preference for a consensus candidate within the party but had not endorsed any individual.

“He promised to facilitate a consensus. However, if that fails, there will be a direct primary,” Adelabu said.

The former minister also described himself as a loyal ally of the president in the state.

“I am the only true son of Asiwaju in Oyo State,” he said.
