The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Dr. Philip Agbese, has called on public relations professionals, media practitioners and public institutions to uphold truth, integrity and professionalism in their communication, describing ethical public relations as a critical pillar for democratic governance, institutional credibility and sustainable national development.

Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, made the call on Thursday in a statement marking the 2026 World Public Relations Day.

The lawmaker, in a statement issued through his Special Assistant, Ibrahim Sani, said public relations goes beyond managing information, stressing that it plays a vital role in building trust, strengthening relationships, promoting mutual understanding and protecting the integrity of institutions.

He noted that communication founded on honesty and professionalism remains indispensable to the growth of every progressive society, adding that institutions derive their strength from the confidence reposed in them by the people.

According to him, “A tree does not stand by its branches alone; it is sustained by the strength of its roots.” He explained that just as strong roots sustain a tree, public confidence remains the foundation upon which credible institutions and democratic governance thrive.

Agbese observed that the rise of digital media and the rapid spread of information have placed greater responsibility on public relations professionals to champion truth, uphold ethical standards, counter misinformation and encourage constructive dialogue capable of uniting communities rather than dividing them.

He commended public relations practitioners in Nigeria and across the world for their commitment to promoting understanding between governments, organisations and citizens, describing their contributions as essential to democratic accountability, peaceful coexistence and national cohesion.

The Deputy Spokesman also urged young Nigerians aspiring to build careers in public relations to embrace excellence, innovation, integrity and continuous learning, noting that credibility remains the greatest asset of every communicator.

Quoting another African proverb, he said, “The reputation of a good name travels farther than the footsteps of its owner,” stressing that a communicator’s reputation is built on honesty, consistency and ethical conduct.

Agbese reaffirmed his commitment to transparent governance, responsible public engagement and people-centred representation, pledging to continue promoting open communication as a cornerstone of effective legislative service.

He further called on communicators, media professionals, institutions and citizens to uphold truth, civility and professionalism in all engagements, emphasizing that nations flourish where trust is protected, dialogue is encouraged and integrity remains non-negotiable.

The lawmaker congratulated public relations professionals worldwide on the occasion of the 2026 World Public Relations Day, applauding their role in strengthening democracy, inspiring public confidence and building bridges of understanding across societies.
