A n100 million Education Intervention Fund has been established by the Akwa Ibom State Government to aid physically challenged students attending public tertiary institutions around the state.
During a courtesy visit to Government House in Uyo by the University of Uyo chapter of the National Association of Students with Disabilities, led by President Comrade Emmanuel Wisdom, Governor Umo Eno made the news.
According to Governor Eno, the project was created to foster a sense of community among students and to highlight his administration’s commitment to diversity.
“The goal is to encourage them and make their lives easier. Let us at least fund their tuition if they want to go to school since they are doing extremely well, even better than some who are not challenged,” Eno stated.
“Everyone of us is challenged in some manner. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone; we will collaborate and support you.”
The Office of the Accountant-General, the Secretary to the State Government, and the Ministries of Education, Women’s Affairs, and Social Welfare would oversee the fund’s disbursement, according to Eno.
He emphasized that the fees are paid directly to the beneficiaries’ institutions, and allowances are distributed to students after careful profile, and he cautioned against bureaucratic delays in the disbursement.
“It’s only 100 million, but we might increase it from time to time.” I don’t want the bureaucratic bottleneck of them applying and there being no money, so we placed the money there for you to manage and give us the report, but please verify and encourage them,” Eno stated.
