Tunji Wusu –
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has denounced the barbaric murder of butcher Usman Buda in Sokoto state by religious radicals.
CAN expressed its sincere sympathies to the deceased’s family and friends in a statement that was signed by its president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.
The Christian organisation claimed that, based on information they have received, Buda was brutally killed for allegedly making a profane remark.
“CAN firmly believes in religious liberty and nonviolently expressing one’s beliefs. Therefore, we reject any use of force or “jungle justice” motivated by a belief system.
“This tragic event shows how urgently our diverse community has to step up efforts to promote religious tolerance, peace, and unity.
“CAN will continue to fight for the defense of all citizens’ rights, irrespective of their place of religious allegiance. For a peaceful Nigeria, we implore religious leaders and adherents to encourage interfaith conversation and harmony. Usman Buda’s family is in our thoughts and prayers during this trying time.
