The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed a rumor that Umunze, the seat of the state’s Orumba South Local Council, is the headquarters of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this in a statement to refute claims made by a kidnapped victim that members of ESN enjoy unrestricted freedom in the Umunze Community.
According to the PPRO: “The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a story making the rounds on social media claiming that Umunze in Orumba South LGA is the Headquarters of ESN and that the Police regard the town as a “No-Go-Area.
“While sympathising with the kidnap victim who was allegedly held for four days in the area, it is important to let the public know that the claims attributed to the man are false and baseless” .
Ikenga noted that just last month, the Police-led “Forward Operating Base” in Aguata demolished the insurgents’ camp at Ogbunka near Umunze, rescuing three abducted victims, including a priest, recovering nine stolen vehicles and three pump Action Guns, and capturing three criminals.
With such accomplishment, the police spokesman stated that Umunze is no longer an ESN enclave or a no-go zone.
He stated that the Police are aware of insurgent activity to the south of Umunze in a neighboring State, and that a joint effort is underway to root them out.
He stated that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has assured the good people of the state that their safety remains the Police Command’s top concern, which is permanent.
